Helprint - What is gravure printing?

The base for the high quality and the glowing colours of the gravure printed work are diamond engravings, chromed cylinders, with which the ink is transferred to the paper. The engraving technique is fast: cylinders can even be completed three hours from the time that the material has arrived at Helprint. The cylinders are used in Helprint’s rotation printing machines, which represent cutting-edge technology. The four printing machines in Mikkeli ensure that the client always receives his ordered products on time.

In the gravure printing technique, the information of the material is transferred to an engraving machine and the diamond engraver starts to cut recesses into a copper cylinder. For dark shades, a deep recess cup is made and for light shades, a shallow recess cup is made. Each part colour is engraved separately. Finally, the cylinders are chrome plated to improve durability.

For each sheet, eight cylinders are prepared, which will even last up to 20 million cylinder revolutions. Thus, the cylinders may print millions of different pieces. Advantages are attained even in regards to small printings, due to the gravure printing’s high quality and rich colours. Helprint’s gravure printing technology allows for a virtually stepless choice of sizes for the printed products. The product can be flexibly cropped between the sizes A5-A3.
